Figures

Page 7 - Figures

What's important on this page?

Figures, of course, are important, but the real thing that matters is the size of the basing. There are 2 basic basing scales, 40mm wide and 60mm wide, and those are what you will see at competitions.

40mm wide is for 15mm figures, and 60mm is for the bigger scales, however if you use loads of smaller-scale figures (ie 6mm or 10mm) on either 40mm wide or 60mm wide bases its hard to see anyone minding too much, especially if they look cool. You'll be playing against people with the same sized basing, and bigger figures, and the game will work just fine.

The rulebook lays out tips for basing models depending on the units' classification, but due to how ADLG relates to other element based games like DBA there is often confusion over the standard.

At its simplest, basing in ADLG is the same as DBx, but units (the key and indivisible block of troops in ADLG) are the size of 1, 2 or 3 DBx bases.

So, in short, an ADLG Unit is made of:
- 2 DBx bases for heavy and medium infantry
- 3 BDx bases for Pikemen
- 1 DBx base for other stuff (Light troops, Cavalry, Elephants, wagons)

Units cannot be split. Therefore when basing heavy infantry, for example, the unit can be based on either one 40mmx30mm base, or two 40mmx15mm bases ranked up (in 15mm scale). They move together all the time, so maybe you want to get some magnabase to sit them on so they stick together - or you can go the whole hog and glue them together as an old-school DBx "DBE".

Pikemen are actually supposed to be on 40x40/60x60 bases, but plenty of people won't want to rebase so the rules allow what is essentially 40x45 in 15mm as well. There is a small chance that this might cause a game-level problem with a deeper than expected base getting in the way occasionally, in which case the rules allow the rear rank to be removed if it gets in the way. But, a 40x40 with 3 or even 4 ranks of pike squeezed on it looks very cool, so as you play more you may find yourself wanting to rebase to 40x40 anyway.

ADLG players are typically not PITA-type rules lawyers over the basing of certain units. For example, cataphracts are suggested to have 4 models on the base, but it is very difficult to actually fit 4, therefore three is good enough if it's clear they are cataphracts! This is even more true at larger scales where the models even for infantry may not fit, especially when using 28mm models with 60mm wide basing.

It is also perfectly possible to base all of your stuff (apart from LF) up on square bases - so everything on 40x40 and 60x60. The author originally wanted this to be the basing convention, but was persuaded that no-one would jump at the chance to rebase all their troops...which was probably correct. But, if you have some big figures that don't quite fit, basing some on square bases is not going to be an issue - promise!

Commanders are on square bases, but some players like to make them round to stand out more. They float around a bit like in FoG, and don't have to wheel so a round base is OK - although if your opponent is a PITA they might whinge that you cant accurately measure moves to end in corner-to-corner contact with other units. If they do that, feel free to give them a slap, as round bases look cool.
