L'Art de la Guerre has been designed first and foremost as a playable, enjoyable game. It has clear roots in DBx games, with elements of other systems as well but the underlying principles to bear in mind when reading and trying to interpret the rules are that the game is about moving toy soldiers around on a tabletop in an enjoyable game that has enough parallels to ancient warfare to make sense as an ancients tabletop game. It is not, and is not trying to be, a fully detailed simulation.

Troops in ADLG want to fight each other - and avoiding that through geometric trickery of previous rulesets is something these rules try to avoid, although inevitably some abstractions and compromises arise as a function of square(ish) bases. However, as you play ADLG more you will realise that there are lots of subtle and well-thought-through bits in the rules that are designed to reduce and where possible eliminate problems that come with the artificiality of the square-base system.
