Persian Mithradates Ktistes whilst in the service of Antigonus (one of Alexander's successors) cleverly managed in 302 BC to create the Kingdom of Pontus, which he and his descendants then ruled. The kingdom reached its zenith under Mithridates VI the Great who famourly and repeatedly fought the Romans. Like any other Hellenistic king, Mithridates VI strove to expand his ancestral domain, and he was indeed more successful than most. Even though scholars have acknowledged the role played by Roman politicians and generals in stirring up the conflict, the predominate view has been that Mithridates provoked the First Mithridatic War as a result of his policy and that he likewise was responsible for the outbreak of the Third Mithridatic War as a response to the Roman inheritance of Bithynia in 74 BC. The expansionist policies of Mithridates VI eventually brought nearly the whole of the Black Sea under his sway. Pontis was finally subjegated by Pompey in 64 BC.
