Canadian Infantry
These are modeled on the 48th Highlanders, and are 15mm figures based for Flames of War Rules
According to information I shamelessly cut and paste from the increasingly excellent Wikipedia The regiment is nicknamed "The Glamour Boys" or "The Dirty Four Dozen". The name "The Glamour Boys" was coined by the other regiments that served with the 48th Highlanders during World War II in the 1st Canadian Infantry Division, 1 Brigade. The nickname "Dirty Four Dozen" is a play on "The Dirty Dozen" and "48" being equivalent to four dozen.
The blue bits are because when brigade was being inspected by King George VI there were not enough regulation khaki puttees (leg wrappings) for all the soldiers. The 48th had to wear unofficial blue puttees. The King inquired as to why the 48th wore different puttees from the rest of the brigade. He was told that there were not enough khaki ones for all the units. The King replied that he liked the blue puttees better and that they should keep them. The 48th Highlanders continued to wear blue puttees until this battledress was eventually phased out.
Having Canadian flags (anachronistically - the regiment would not have worn Maple Leaf flags on their shoulders in WWII as that flag was not created until the mid-1960s - it was only made the national flag in 1965. Previous to that, the national flag was the Union Flag, with red and blue ensigns bearing the Canadian coat-of-arms used to distinguish Canada within the Empire. The unit would not have worn any sort of flags, they would have had shoulder tiles) and blue puttees makes them a lot more interesting to paint and deploy than most bog-standard British WW2 infantry!
