Wargamers Island Books

Our First Ever US Import of Desert Island Books - with Joey Miller !!

  • How did you get into wargaming ? (not "when" as that might scare a few potential Desert Island Wargamers away!!)

My brother and I bought "Panzer Blitz" the AH game when we were in high school.  We had no idea who to play the game, but it looked neat. My Dad built 1/72nd scale WWII models , loved military history, and installed the love of history in us. There was a copy of the "General" , a AH wargame magazine in the Panzer Blitz game.  In the back was a  wargame opponents wanted listing, and there was a wargame club in our city. I remember telling my brother not to call them as they were probably weirdos. He did called anyway, but I was right. We have been gaming over 30 years now.

  • What was your first army, and where are they now ?

Casarian R*m*ns, 5th Ed. WRG.  I still have 4 stands of Numidan LH serving in my 25mm Poeni army from this army. I sold the R*m*ns into slavery long ago.

  • What's your favorite army and/or set of figures in your possession, and why?

My Carthos are my favorite. The idea of recreating Hannibal's brilliance appeals to me. The Carthos are a classic army, and not overwhelming in any one area. They can be configured in many different ways and I've always enjoyed playing them. They are a toolkit army, but  as my friend Lee says, "sometimes you have to use a spanner wrench as a hammer."

Joeys 10 favorite books are listed below. The links go directly to the UK or US Amazon pages where you can find out more about each one.

Amazon UK Amazon US
Insurrection, Crusade & In Death Ground David Weber & Steve White:

Sci Fi military, a series of novels about total war between Earth and aliens

The Second World War   Sir Winston Church

History, The great man's account of WWII.

Game of Thrones, Clash of Kings, Storm of Swords   George R.R. Martin

Fantasy novels, The War of the Roses set in alternate world. Follow the adventures of Great Houses Stark, Lannistar, and others. Don't get too attached to the main characters however

The Western Way of War  Victor Hansen Davis

Military History.  Classic book on the Greek Hoplite's warfare in classical Greece.

Lonesome Dove   Larry McMurtry

Western novel following the adventures of 2 Texas Rangers. I am not much on westerns usually, but this a great read. It is much better than the mini series, which was very good, IMHO.

Marching Through Georgia   SM Stirling

Sci Fi Alternate History. 1st in series about the Draka, South Africans who have enslaved all of Africa during the 18th-20th century. The Georgia in the title is the one on the Black Sea and the novel is set during WII.  The Draka make the Nazis look like choir boys.

Encyclopedia of Military History, 3500 BC to Present    Dupuy and Dupy

Military History, Covers every conflict from 3500 BC to present. A classic reference that every wargamer must have.

The Prince    Jerry Pournelle  SM Stirling

Sci Fi Military  inspired by Machivelli's "the Prince", Adventures of Colonel John Christian Falkenburg, a mercenary commander in the CoDominium.

The Face of Battle   John Keegan

Military history. 3 Battles, Agincourt, Waterloo and the Somme told from the dogface POV. Great stuff.

Starship Troopers   Robert Heinlein

Sci Fi Military, follow Johnny Rico's adventures in the Mobile infantry vs humanity's enemies in a future war. Classic sci-fi novel.
