Ostrogoths at Campaign 2026

This year I returned to Campaign for the first time in a while, as part of one of the CLWC teams of three players in the traditionally tightly themed event. The pool I was in was themed for the Wars of Atilla, with Huns, Patrician Romans, Gepids, Arabs and Ostrogoths as the only options.

Having already used Patricians and Huns and Gepids, and deciding that the Arab army in this time period was a bit rubbish, the Ostrogoths ended up being the default choice - rather irritatingly as I had recently sold my Sarmatian/Gothic cavalry on eBat prior to replacing them with some as-yet unpainted FiB figures!

That meant my Ostrogoths did look a tad Gallo-German, but they were close enough so that's how they rolled into Milton Keynes ready for battle.

The Ostrogoths are an Impetuous Heavy Cavalry list, with 8 Elite guys allowed - all of whom I took of course.

I opted for a structure of 2 decent sized blocks of Elite and non-Elite Heavy cavalry - no Mediums, as I thought I'd be fighting against Heavy Cavalry almost all of the time, so having less units all armoured to the hilt was better than having less armour on more units - and a micro command as well.

All three of my Commanders were non-included, as each command had some other troops who I thought might need to move around once the lines of Impetuous cavalry had gotten stuck into one another.

Finally, the other curveball was 2 Impetuous Heavy Infantry - hard to coordinate with Impetuous Cavalry, but deadly agaiinst any enemy archers, and a pretty stodgy mobile terrain-like block of solidity to support my own archers and also absorb (perhaps) some enemy cavalry to help my own guys achieve numerical superiority in the Impetuous HCv Elite face-off I expected to engage in in most games.

The lists for the Ostrogoths and all of the other armies in these reports from Campaign 2026 can be seen here in the L'Art de la Guerre Wiki.

So, with a trip to Milton keynes and its evil parking regime, Campaign was playing host to the Ostrogoths

Game 1 Ostrogoths vs Patrician Romans

In this game Ostrogoth army was charging into some rebel Ostrogoths, and a load of less-good Roman cavalry while trying to avoid being outflanked by an ambush of auxilia in a plantation.

This would be a good, unsubtle start to the weekend, with lots of cavalry carnage on all sides.

Cavalry!

Will the Loyalist Ostrogoths triumph, or will the Patrician Roman's mercenary Ostrogoths and horse archers hang on until their Auxilia can save the day?

Game 2 Ostrogoths vs Patrician Romans

In this game Ostrogoth army was facinga table divided by heavy artillery - new tech they had no idea about, so would probably just charge into anyway as that seems to be Plan A at all times.

This would be a challenge of sophistication and ingenuity against mad attacking fury.

Charge!

Will the lances of Ostrogoths triumph, or will the Patrician Roman's massive engines of destruction cause Ostrogoths to be checked in their headlong rush ?

Game 3 Ostrogoths vs Gepids

In this game Ostrogoth army was facing even more Elite lancers than they themselves had.

This would be a conundrum of terrain, and may even require a little patience.

cavalryman

Will the careful cunning of the Ostrogoths triumph, or will the Gepid's more numerous nobility do the Ostrogoths in?

Game 4 Ostrogoths vs More Ostrogoths

In this game Ostrogoths army was involved in a civil war, putting their cousins in the corner and trying not to let them out.

This would be about as unsubtle as it gets really - two identical armies on a narrow frontage.

horsemen

Will my Ostrogoths triumph, or will the Other Ostrogoths win out?

Game 5 Ostrogoths vs Even More Ostrogoths

In this game Ostrogoths army faced an almost identical situatin to Game 4 - so much so that when recording the commentary I thought that Game 4 was actually this one!

The terrain was almost identical, so would the outcome be to?

Civil War

Will the Ostrogoths again triumph, or will the Ostrogoths also triumph instead?

That's the end - so why not go back to the Match Reports Index and read some more reports?
