Feudal English in Nancy, 2026

This 2026's event at Nancy allowed me to wheel out my 15mm Feudal English , this time in a 5-game Impetuous Armies event where I could field a load of Feudal Knights, and indeed I would have to as the event had an unusual Impetuous Armies: of your 200 points, at least 70 had to be spent on impetuous troops, with a minimum of seven such units. As any ADLG player will know that presents some interesting challenges, particularly when the standard approach is often to move a six-base-wide block around the table!

Heavy knights were also excluded from the competition, which naturally pushed army selection in some interesting directions. In my case, I decided to focus on medium knights, using a number of recently refurbished figures. Most were Mirliton miniatures, with a few Essex figures mixed in. I reckoned that they looked pretty good, and so I was keen to get them onto the table.

Since I was travelling to France with three other players from central London, I wanted to take a thematic army. Whenever I attend an overseas tournament, I like to field something with a connection to the host nation where possible. After a fair amount of indecision, I settled on a Feudal English army from the reign of Edward I, around 1273.

Overall, this army was built to create entertaining and thematic games rather than exploit any particular competitive advantage - although the Longbowmen were of course a very English not so secret weapon that this army had a number of. Their shooting would be vital if the army were to live up to it's potential in the 5 games over the weekend.

The lists for the Feudal English and all of the other armies in these reports from Nancy 2026 can be seen here in the L'Art de la Guerre Wiki.

So, with a bit of tourism undertaken alog the way, soon Nancy was playing host to the Feudal English

Game 1 Feudal English vs Estonian & Prussian

In this game Feudal English army was facing the Estonians, built around a formidable mass of impetuous swordsmen, many of them elite nobles fighting on foot.

Looking across the table I felt reasonably confident - my Knights running down Medium Swordsmen in the open seemed an ideal way to start the weekend! There was even a large open area in the centre waiting for them, giving,as every English commander dreams of, plenty of room for knights to lower their lances and start causing trouble. In theory, at least.

Get on with It

Will the trample-tastic abillities of the Feudal English triumph, or will the Estonians woodland survival skills cause Feudal English to be chopped down?

Game 2 Feudal English vs Feudal French

In this game Feudal English army was against its traditinal enemy, The French!

OK, they were commanded by a German player, but hey, you have to take these opportunities when they come.

Moche

Will the Longbowmen of the Feudal English recreate Agincourt, or will the Feudal French's baguette-inspired Elan triumph over Feudal English boiled ham and unfragrant cheese?

Game 3 Feudal English vs Kingdom of Sicily

In this game Feudal English army faced Baron Hubert of Sicily, with a wall of Knights the like of which the world had never seen.

This would be a true test of the accuracy of English Longbows yet again, and the stoic resistance of English Yeoman spears.

Sicily

Will the Feudal English multi-dimensinal hodgepodge triumph, or will the Kingdom of Sicily's simple and broad hammer tactics strike a blow for the Mediterranean diet against Roast Beef?

Game 4 Feudal English vs Feudal Scots

In this game Feudal English army faced yet another Auld Enemy, this time from North of the Border.

Commanded by le Emperor of France, this would be a trip to the dentist that at least one of these forces would never forget.

IMAGEDESCRIPTION

Which army would be left with the bill, and which with the shiny new dentures in this battle of the Jocks against the Limeys?

Game 5 a Feudal English Civil War

In this game Feudal English army truly meets its match, in a near identical force on classic English terrain

The future lineage of the English throne is at stake - will it be handed to the Germans to pick up the crown or held in this green and pleasant land ?

German man

Which set of Feudal English will triumph, or which will fall at the last hurdle?

You can see some of these figures being assembled and painted elsewhere on this site. That includes The Knights, some spearmen and the Flemish Pikemen.

On this trip we also did some tourism..

That's the end - so why not go back to the Match Reports Index and read some more reports?
